Pros and Cons of a Jailbroken iPhone

February 16, 2011 Leave a comment

There are so many great things about an iPhone. The possibilities and capabilities are essentially limitless in todays technological world. However, in order for some of those capabilities to work they must be unlocked. There are many things that Apple does not want you to do with an iPhone and they restrict iPhone users from utilizing these things. Jailbreaking your iPhone is simple and once done it enables your iPhone to be customized in almost every aspect. I have put together a list of pros and cons to jailbreaking your iPhone. Hopefully my list of pros and cons will help you decide what to do if you are torn between whether you want to jailbreak your iPhone or not.

PROS:

  • You can download apps that Apple’s app store would not accept
  • You can completely customize the look and feel of your iPhone’s interface
  • App sharing with the app called Installous
  • Enable Wireless Tethering (e.i. turning your iPhone into a wireless hot spot) on the AT&T network
  • You can beam files over to your iPhone from your windows laptop with WinSCP. Find out more here
  • Filter incoming calls with iBlackList
  • Track your lost/stolen iPhone with iLocalis

CONS:

  • You cannot install the software updates that Apple releases without “unjailbreaking” your phone. But there will usually be another jailbreak update for Apples new firmware.
  • If you use the app called Installous, it is illegal. It is the Limewire of iPhone apps.
  • Jailbreaking IS illegal. Jailbreaking is the process by which an iPhone firmware is modified to allow unsigned code to be run to gain access to files that Apple wouldn’t normally let you access.

At first glance it may seem as if the pros outweigh the cons and it would be beneficial to jailbreak your iPhone. However, the consequences that those three cons possess may prove to outweigh the pros. But it all comes down to a matter of individual opinion and usage.
